It took just two victories to set up a District 6-2A championship game for the Ville Platte High Lady Bulldogs. They got those two wins by pummeling Loreauville and Sacred Heart earlier this week. The back-to-back league wins kept the Lady Bulldogs undefeated in league play. Tuesday night they will face the Jeanerette Lady Tigers in Ville Platte. A win for the Lady Bulldogs will mean another district title. It will be the first one for new head coach Dot Doulet, who took over for legendary long-time coach Elton Williams.
The Lady Bulldogs destroyed the Lady Tigers of Loreauville 75-31. The first period of the game was a pure example of how dominant the game was going to be. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 14-point run and held their opponent scoreless. Deangenee Thomas scored seven points in the first frame and Kimberly Frank dropped a three-point shot. The second period was more of the same. This time, the Lady Bulldogs piled up 28 points on the wings of a nine-point period from Breonna O’Conner. She hit a three-point bucket and then a trio of jump shots. Thomas scored another six points and Dashea Arvie was good for seven points. Frank stayed consistent with another three-point shot in the block. Ville Platte High was very much in charge of this contest with a 42-12 lead at the intermission.
The second half continued to be an overwhelming performance for the girls in purple and white. VPHS scored 33 points and held the LHS girls to 19 points. O’Conner scored an amazing 14 points in the third period and went on to a team-high 25 points. Frank hit a pair of three-point shots in the third period and went on to a 12-point night. Thomas closed out her account with 13 points overall.
The momentum from the victory of the Loreauville game seemed to feed more momentum for the VPHS girls going into the contest against the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans. This game was huge because a win set the stage for the league title game against the Jeanerette Lady Tigers Tuesday night.
Ville Platte opened up the game SHHS strong. The two teams traded buckets for the first few minutes of the game. Sarah Fontenot scored seven points in the period and opened the game with a three-point shot. She did her best to get the Lady Trojans going. O’Conner did the same for the VPHS girls. She hit a three-point bomb and had a total of seven points in the opening period. Her efforts helped her team to a 14-9 lead after the first eight-minute block.
VPHS dominated the second period tremendously. They went up 32-13 and out-scored their counterparts 18-4 in the frame. Thomas got hot and hit seven points, while Arvie was right behind her with five points. It was an impressive performance on both sides of the ball for the girls in purple and white as the halftime drew near.
The third period iced the game for the VPHS girls. They scored a total of 33 points and held the SHHS girls to 10 digits. O’Conner went off, scoring 16 points in the block. She went on to a 27-point night to lead her squad. Arvie chipped in with seven points in the period and finished her night with 14 points. Thomas was good for 12 points in the game and led the VPHS girls in rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs went on to a 73-42 victory over their cross-town rivals. They played very well and will be looking to keep piling good game on top of good game as they try and clinch the league title Tuesday night at VPHS. Senior Sarah Fontenot led Sacred Heart with 14 points. Fellow senior Elizabeth Ardoin chipped in with 10 points in the contest.
