OPELOUSAS - Funeral services were held for Rev. Jeremy O’Neill, 82, of Opelousas, at St. Joseph Church in Plaisance at 11 a.m., Monday, February 1.
A member of the Olivetan Branch of the Benedictive Congregation, Rev. O’Neill passed away peacefully into eternal life Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Prompt Succor Nursing Facility in Opelousas, where he was a resident for the past year. He was born in County Kerry on December 9, 1924, and educated in Ireland. He arrived in New York City in September of 1937 and was naturalized in 1939. He pursued the nursing profession in New York for a number of years prior to his study for the priesthood. He was ordained a benedictive priest on October 14, 2000, and served in this capacity until his transfer to Prompt Succor Nursing Facility.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Liam J. and Mary O’Neill; and one sister, Katty O’Neill.
