Trojans lose late in wild shootout with Hornets

The Sacred Heart defense took control in the second half against Catholic of Pointe Coupee Friday night and gave the Trojans a chance to win late in the game.

In one of the wildest games in Sacred Heart history, the Trojans gave every ounce of energy and pride in a heartbreaking loss to Catholic of Pointe Coupee at Soileau-Landry field by a score of 55-51. Both teams combined for almost 1,100 yards of total offense in the game.

Bulldogs give valiant effort in loss to Wildcats

Ville Platte senior Oxabien Serie has been a consistent performer on offense and defense for the Bulldogs.

Ville Platte High came into this district game Friday night like giants after beating division foes Port Barre and Pine Prairie in consecutive weeks. Livonia came into the game as royals of Class 2A. The Wildcats are state runners-up from a year ago and are ranked first in the current polls.

Raiders edge Panthers in key district matchup

Pine Prairie senior running back Douglas Fontenot has provided plenty of offense for the Panthers so far this season.

Pine Prairie and Northwest came into the game Friday night with both teams needing a district win. However, the victory went to Northwest Raiders with a final score 12-6.

Demons outgunned by Lions in district contest

Mamou High senior Daniel Matthews has been an all-around threat on offense, defense and special teams for the Demons in 2014.

The Mamou Demons took their 1-6 record on the road to Vinton High School in hopes of adding a second win of the season. It was not to be for Mamou, as the Lions amassed 512 total yards on offense in a 40-19 victory. The loss now puts the Demon record at 1-7 overall and 0-3 in district.

Bearcats score late in thrilling win over Trojans

The Basile Bearcats and the East Beauregard Trojans came into Friday’s contest with identical records. Both squads had lost to Hamilton Christian. Both squads had very similar stats, so one could expect the showdown between these district 4-1A opponents to be a thrilling game to watch.

Crash at Lincoln/Chataignier corner

Two trucks collided at the new four-way stop on the corner of Lincoln Road and Chataignier Street Thursday, October 23. The white Dodge Ram pickup, travelling west on Lincoln Road, collided with the delivery truck as it came from the north side of the roadway. No injuries were reported.

School/District scores ‘exciting news’ for parish

The biggest, and possibly best, news to come out of the release of school performance scores by the Louisiana Department of Education Tuesday, October 21, is that this school district as a whole has increased its score from a C (76.6) to a B (88.7).

A mistrial was declared last week in the case against Steveniski Marquelle Frank by 13th Judicial District Judge John Larry Vidrine, who cited the “Brady Rule” as the reason for the mistrial.

The Ville Platte High Bulldogs are riding high off a two game win streak and the confidence that comes with it. The Bulldogs have beaten district opponents Port Barre and Pine Prairie in the last two weeks.

Trojans host Hornets in district game

The Sacred Heart Trojans are starting to feel that things are coming together as they have won their last two ball games in decisive fashion. This past Friday the Trojan defense flexed its muscles and shut down the False River Gators inside their five yard line on three separate occasions.

Demons seek win in Vinton

The Mamou High Demons are in need of a victory after losing their last five games. The Demons travel to Vinton to take on the Lions Friday night hoping to get that victory.

The 4-H “Cotton Pickin’ Pet Show” was held on Wednesday, October 8, at the Ville Platte Civic Center. There were more than 80 pets entered in the show this year.

EUNICE - Funeral services will be held for Robert “Sonny” Spears, 79, of Reddell, at the Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Eunice at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 22. Burial will follow in the Durio Cemetery in Eunice.
