One charged with narcotics

An Evangeline Parish woman is facing charges after she allegedly brought narcotics into the parish jail.

Captain Keith Dupre, chief of detectives, said charges of introducing contraband into a jail facility (to wit: marijuana) have been brought against Thelaka Stevens, 26, 2026 Lezo St., Ville Platte.

Stevens allegedly brought a package to an inmate in the jail Saturday, October 4. He said when deputies checked the bag she left, they found marijuana inside a pack of cigars. Stevens had left the jail, and Tuesday, October 7, Warden Wilford “Fefe” Jack brought her to the detectives division to discuss the package. Dupre said she attempted to say she had met an individual in the parking lot and was asked to bring the items inside the jail. However, he said evidence indicated Stevens was the person responsible for the package.

Dupre said Warden Jack and Deputy Tommy Mayers did a wonderful job. He said Mayers discovered the marijuana during his search of the package. “It was a great job on his part,” he said.

Dupre encouraged residents to report any illegal activities to the sheriff’s department at 363-2161.
