Damien Aguillard, 30, died July 24, by drowning while on vacation with family and friends.

Aguillard was the fire chief of the Vidrine Volunteer Fire Department for the past two years, and was an employee at Evangeline Co-op for four years. He was honored during his funeral with a full honor guard. His casket was carried through the Town of Mamou on the back of a fire truck. There were approximately a dozen fire trucks in the procession. Aguillard’s fellow firemen also stood guard at the funeral home.

Aguillard leaves behind a wife, Heather, and four daughters. A memorial fund has been set up to assist his family at Citizens Bank in Mamou. (See his obituary on page 2.)

District Fire Chief Garry Reed said Aguillard was the spark plug of the Vidrine department. He said Aguillard was always concerned about the safety of his men and was the one who really pushed to get the department moving and held it together.

“It only takes one good guy to get things going,” Reed said. “He (Aguillard) was that guy. He will be greatly missed by everyone.”
