Chester Courville of Cow Island is recovering at Rapides Medical Center after his crop duster crashed near Vidrine Sunday, March 22.

Mamou District Fire Chief Garry Reed said his department and the Vidrine Fire Department were called to the scene at 8:06 a.m. Sunday morning. Also at the scene, he said, were the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, two ambulances and a helicopter from Acadian Ambulance.

Reed said his department cleared an area for the helicopter to land so Courville could be air lifted to the Rapides Medical Center. Vidrine Fire Chief Jason Deshotel was the person who pulled Courville out of the cockpit.

According to family members, Courville suffered several broken bones and a head injury. Courville was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. It was the first crash he experienced in his 30 years of flying.

Reed said the crash is being investigation by the FAA to determine the cause. Also visiting the crash site, according to Reed, were the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of Environmental Quality.

Family members said Courville is currently in stable condition and recovering from his injuries.
